For those who know singer/songwriter, Tori Kelly, know that she arguably has the best vocal chops in the music industry (yes, including Beyonce). Not only does she have the power and raspiness that every amazing singer has, but she can also bend her voice to do the many riffs and runs that one might hear in a cover that she has done, or even an original song that she has released.
Between 2007 and 2012, Tori had already began gaining her core fan base. When she was just 16 years old, she auditioned for Season 9 of American Idol. Two of the judges agreed that she had the voice and look that would catapult her far into the show, but one judge disagreed vehemently. After hearing Tori sing John Meyer’s “Gravity”, Simon Cowell responded by saying, “I thought your voice was almost annoying.” Though she made it to Hollywood week, she did not qualify for the Top 24, and her American Idol run stopped there.
American Idol Audition:
In a recent interview posted on YouTube by Wild 94.1, Tori spoke out publicly for the first time about Cowell’s comments on her 2009 audition.
“First of all, I understood going into it that it was a TV show. So I had to be understanding like, ‘oh they’re looking for a certain cast, basically.’ And on the other hand too, I think getting cut from that show was the best thing that could’ve happened for me because I learned so much just in that little time that I was on it. And I feel like right after I got cut, that’s what inspired me to even start posting videos. So it’s like, it’s such a huge part of my whole journey…”
Wild 94.1 interview:
And a huge part of Tori’s journey it was. Since being cut from American Idol, Tori has signed with agent, Scooter Braun (manages Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, The Wanted, Carley Rae Jepsen) and Capitol Records. She has worked with top notch artist and producers including Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Professor Green, Max Martin and Toby Gad, and as of now, she has over 1 million subscribers and over 98 million views on YouTube.
With the pop singers debut album, Unbreakable Smile, hitting the stores today, fans can expect to hear an exceptional record that has been long overdue. And for those of you who are new to Tori Kelly should take a listen and support a true artist at work (you may have already heard the leading single off of her album on the radio titled “Nobody Love”). Not only does the girl have talent vocally, but she also produces and writes just about all of her songs. I encourage newcomers to take a listen to the few songs that I see as highlights from the album first, and then if you like what you hear, listen to the album in its entirety, and search some of Tori’s top videos on YouTube.
